VRTI Research Fellow Dr Sarah Hendriks begins Maddock Research Fellowship at Marsh’s Library, Dublin

This month, VRTI Research Fellow Dr Sarah Hendriks will begin her Maddock Research Fellowship at Marsh’s Library, Dublin.

Sarah’s fellowship will focus on the papers of Dudley Loftus and John Stearne as well as exploring the many individual records that relate to materials once held in the PROI including deeds, papers of Irish officials (including Lord Lieutenants, Lord Justices, Sheriffs, and Lord Deputies) and those relating to matters of governance.

Marsh’s Library has already contributed several items to the VRTI, a highlight being the copies of Huguenot Papers (Marsh Y3 5/16/2) made in the PROI. Philip Maddock’s Replica Leather Bindings of Parliamentary Papers have also made a valuable contribution.

Research conducted during the fellowship will not only enhance knowledge about Marsh’s manuscript collection, but also help to identify potential future work and collaboration with other VRTI participating institutions.

Marsh’s Library is located in St Patrick’s Close, beside St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin. It is a beautifully preserved library of the early Enlightenment. It was built with money provided by Archbishop Narcissus Marsh, an academic and book lover with a strong belief in the public utility of education and learning. The Library was incorporated in 1707 by an Act of Parliament called ‘An Act for Settling and Preserving a Public Library for Ever’. For the first century and a half of its existence it was the only public library in Dublin.

Today, it is a charitable trust open to the general public, students and scholars, and is independent of any and all other institutions and entities. It is governed under a board of trustees known as the Governors and Guardians.
